The University Chorus is the oldest musical organization on the UNM campus with roots back to at least 1926. Not a traditional college choir, it is a unique mix of traditional students, faculty, staff and community members. It is a non-auditioned chorus, open to anyone. Our mission is to serve our community by: 1) Assuring the viability and continuity of choral music throughout New Mexico. and 2) Increasing the understanding and enjoyment of choral music to citizens of all ages. To fulfill these important needs, we intend to: 1)Create scholarship funds to train the choral leaders of the future. 2) Offer concerts for ticket prices that are either free or affordable to a broader audience, with special emphasis on children. 3) Bring the premiere choral music composers and performers to New Mexico to entice participation and enhance understanding and appreciation of this important form of music. 4) Create and support the first-ever UNM Children's Chorus, drawn from every elementary school in APS, with scholarships available to every school, as well. The Children's Chorus premiered in Popejoy Hall at our Spring Concert in April, and performed beautifully for well-pleased audience. We have endowed our first Scholarship and the recipient sang with us this past academic year. We have partly endowed two others. Our goal is to raise $300,000, to endow 16 choral scholarships. For more information on how you can contribute, contact Carolyn Ward @ Chocolate Properties, LLC (who sings in the chorus) at 856-6035.
